Save the Children in Indonesia is changing for the better. We've begun to build a national organization that aims to be a strong, local, and self-sustaining voice for children in Indonesia. To this end, SC Indonesia has been designated as a “Prospect Member”. As ‘Prospect Member’ Indonesia has been identified as part of the next way of new member development, which focuses on strengthening and localizing our voice for children in strategic middle income countries. Indonesia has been authorized by member ballot to start fundraising locally as a first step towards building a financially sustainable local organization. Future work will also involve developing a strong local governance structure and building key partnerships with local government, the private sector, local civil society among others. Success of the pilot phase will set the Indonesia on a pathway to full membership. We are currently seeking to fill the following position:

Consultant for Health & Nutrition Project Heinz ABC

1 (one) position, based in Karawang, West Java

Background

The first 1,000 days are a time of tremendous potential and enormous vulnerability. How well or how poorly mothers and children are nourished and cared for during this time has a profound impact on a child’s ability to grow, learn and thrive. This is because the first 1,000 days are when a child’s brain begins to grow and develop and when the foundations for their lifelong health are built. Nutrition, in particular, plays a foundational role in a child’s development and her country’s ability to prosper. Poor nutrition in the first 1,000 days can cause stunting, irreversible damage to a child’s growing brain, affecting her ability to do well in school and earn a good living—and making it harder for a child and her family to rise out of poverty. It can also set the stage for later obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases which can lead to a lifetime of health problems. Studies show that countries that fail to invest in the well-being of women and children in the first 1,000 days lose billions of dollars to lower economic productivity and higher health costs

Problem Statement

147.000 children in Indonesia died before their 5th birthday.
38% children in Indonesia suffered stunting & 20% suffered low body weight.
Parents lack awareness on the importance of children developmental stimulation, health-nutrition and protection on their first 1000 days of life.
60% of babies aged 0-6 months do not get exclusive breast milk, and 2 out of 3 children aged 0-24 months do not consume complementary feeding (MPASI).
1 out of 3 pregnant women in Indonesia are anemic and malnourished due to lack of nutrition, iron supplements and folic acid.
Quality of food and clean water are often compromised due to low purchasing ability, limited access to nutritious food staples and access to health and educatio centers.
Most of the healthcare-providers/ practitioners in Maternal and Child Helath Services (Posyandu) in Indonesia do not have knowledge and training related to first 1000 days of children life and stunting prevention.
Based on the Presidential Regulation No.42 Year 2013 on the Acceleration of Nurition Correction (Peraturan Presiden No. 42 Tahun 2013 tentang Percepatan Perbaikan Gizi) and multi-stakeholder commitment to combating stunting in Indonesia, there is a national strategy formulated and adhered by supporting agencies and organizations, including by Save the Children Indonesia. The strategy focuses on (i) decreasing stunting rate by focusing on the First 1000 Days of Life (HPK-Hari Pertama Kehidupan) and (ii) multisectoral approach ( health, education, food security, economy and poverty reduction). The strategy was translated into two major approach which are (1) Sensitive Nutrition Intervention, covering development intervention outside of health sector targeting public in general. This is projected to contribute to 70% of stunting prevention; (2) Specific Nutrition Intervention, focusing on the First 1000 Days of Life. Generally covers nutrition fulfillment. This is projected to contribute 30% to stunting prevention.

Translating the above strategy, Save The Children formulated six prevention program focus that will address problems stated before. The six prevention program focus are as follows:

Public Awareness; driving public participation in ground areas and social media.
Strengthening local policy; advocating Village Fund (Dana Desa) and District budget allocation for stunting prevention.
