The Zoological Society of London is an international wildlife conservation organization with a focus on science-based and pragmatic solutions. ZSL has been active in Indonesia for about 10 years, with a particular focus on the overlap between industrial development and biodiversity conservation. ZSL Indonesia is based in Bogor, West Java, with existing field projects in Jambi and South Sumatera. We are now looking for:

ZSL Indonesia is a highly diverse programme with projects involving climate change, public-private-people partnerships, sustainable landscape management, in addition to species conservation (namely the Sumatran tiger), protected area management, and combatting wildlife crime.

The UKCCU/NICFI Project works with the Government of South Sumatra, national and district level governments, communities and the private sector to facilitate and support the government, private sector and local communities, to establish and pilot the sustainable landscape management partnership approach in the Sembilang-Dangku landscape of South Sumatra. The proposed impact of this project is to achieve “Inclusive economic growth and community prosperity, biodiversity conservation, forest protection and restoration, and the ending of deforestation, peatland drainage and wildfires that contribute to land-based Greenhouse Gas emissions”.

Key Purpose of the Job 

The UKCCU/NICFI through KELOLA Sendang Project works with the Government of South Sumatra, national and district level governments, communities and the private sector to facilitate and support the government, private sector and local communities, to establish and pilot the sustainable landscape management partnership approach in the Sembilang-Dangku landscape of South Sumatra. The proposed impact of this project is to achieve “Inclusive economic growth and community prosperity, biodiversity conservation, forest protection and restoration, and the ending of deforestation, peatland drainage and wildfires that reduces land-based Greenhouse Gas emissions”.

One of the main focuses of KELOLA Sendang is to resolve landscape management issues, such as deforestation, through partnerships with various stakeholders, one of which is the local community. Lubuk Bintialo Village is one KELOLA Sendang intervention villages.. Located directly adjacent to Meranti protected forest makes community development interventions important. One alternative economic source developed by KELOLA Sendang together with Gapoktan Meranti Wana Makmur Gapoktan through social forestry scheme in Lubuk Bintialo Village is stingless beekeeping.

Stingless beekeeping is relatively new concept for communities in Lubuk Bintialo Village. Technical assistance and training in beekeeping methods are therefore needed, such as the selection of potential local stingless bee species that can be farmed, beekeeping techniques, and identification of feed plant species that are preferred by local stingless bees. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the variety of stingless bee species within the area and the species of feed plants, so that the Gapoktan has information and to develop stingless beekeeping business within the area.

Scope of Work

1.     Identify species diversity of stingless bee colonies surrounding Lubuk Bintialo village and Meranti protected forest.

2.     Identify local feed plants species diversity for stingless bees surrounding Lubuk Bintialo village and Meranti protected forest.

3.     Increase the potential for stingless beekeeping in Lubuk Bintialo Village by providing training in stingless beekeeping techniques to Gapoktan in Lubuk Bintialo village.

Deliverables

1.    Sample collection (survey) report and stingless beekeeping technique training report

2.    Book of stingless bee species and local feed plants species diversity in Lubuk Bintialo village and Meranti protected forest

3.    Stingless beekeeping technique manual book

4.    Final draft of scientific article

Recruitment Qualifications:

The consultant should have master’s degree of Biology and have proven experience with applied stingless bee research.
