The Zoological Society of London is an international wildlife conservation organization with a focus on science-based and pragmatic solutions. ZSL has been active in Indonesia for about 10 years, with a particular focus on the overlap between industrial development and biodiversity conservation. ZSL Indonesia is based in Bogor, West Java, with existing field projects in Jambi and South Sumatera. We are now looking for:

ZSL Indonesia is a highly diverse programme with projects involving climate change, public-private-people partnerships, sustainable landscape management, in addition to species conservation (namely the Sumatran tiger), protected area management, and combatting wildlife crime.

The UKCCU/NICFI Project works with the Government of South Sumatra, national and district level governments, communities and the private sector to facilitate and support the government, private sector and local communities, to establish and pilot the sustainable landscape management partnership approach in the Sembilang-Dangku landscape of South Sumatra. The proposed impact of this project is to achieve “Inclusive economic growth and community prosperity, biodiversity conservation, forest protection and restoration, and the ending of deforestation, peatland drainage and wildfires that contribute to land-based Greenhouse Gas emissions”..

Key Purpose of the Job 

Project of Kelola Sendang (KS) supports Government of South Sumatra Province in developing a sustainable landscape management partnership model in the Sembilang – Dangku Landscape. Sembilang-Dangku is a lowland landscape that stretches between Berbak-Sembilang National Park and Dangku Wildlife Reserve. The 1.6-million-hectare landscape consists of conservation areas, production, community control, and included important peatland area inside. This Project apply Landscape approach based on jurisdiction to support local government developing partnership, governance, and landscape management model at the site level..

One of the directions of the Governor of South Sumatra in an audience with the KELOLA Sendang project was the importance of the KS to support food security and reduce poverty rates. The directive needs to be followed up with by developing activities that are relevant to sustainable agriculture and food security.. Food Security and Sovereignty Study in the Sembilang-Dangku Landscape and Climate - SMART Agriculture Implementation Training will provide policy and program recommendations and initiatives for sustainable agriculture development and food security in Sembilang-Dangku landscape. This is also consistent with Target No. 2 of SDGs which is the fulfilment of right to food and zero hunger.

Study in the form of action research in analysing food security and sovereignty situation in villages within Sembilang-Dangku landscape (in 3 Model Areas: Model Area 1 -- Dangku Meranti, Model Area 2 -- Peat Hydrology Unit and Model Area 3 -- Banyuasin II), policy and program recommendations as well as pilot and introduction to farmers for the application of agroecology – through Climate SMART Agriculture training are therefore needed to be conducted.

For this reason, we need a consultant who can conduct a Food Security and Sovereignty Study in the Sembilang-Dangku Landscape and Climate Implementation - SMART Agriculture Training. Consultants must have the ability and experience of developing concepts in the field of sustainable agriculture, conducting studies related to food security and sovereignty.

Scope of Work

1.         Identify food situation in villages of Sembilang-Dangku landscape (in three model areas)

2.         Evaluate the condition of food security and sovereignty in villages of Sembilang-Dangku landscape

3.         Provide intervention recommendations to strengthen food security and sovereignty in villages of Sembilang-Dangku landscape

4.      Increase the capacity of farmer groups in the implementation of Climate SMART Agriculture

5.      Ensure 30% women participation and involvement

Deliverables

1.          Survey report of assignment

2.          Documentation and compilation of field stories on food security and sovereignty in villages of Sembilang-Dangku landscape

3.          Policy recommendations document on strengthening food security and sovereignty in villages of Sembilang-Dangku landscape


Recruitment Qualifications:

Institution or organization with proven experience in implementing agroecology, especially in farming community and in preparing relevant research studies.
