Key Purpose of the Job

The Government of Indonesia has issued policies to provide legal access rights to communities to manage forest areas through the Social Forestry (Perhutanan Sosial) scheme. Social forestry is implemented under 5 schemes: Village Forest (HD), Community Forest (HKm), Community Plantation Forest (HTR), Forestry Partnership and Customary Forest (HA).

To support efforts to improve community management rights through community development programs, KELOLA Sendang Project has developed 3 concepts of social forestry (PS) models between communities and KPH, including (1). Muara Medak PS with an area of 3,500 Ha using the Forestry Partnership approach in collaboration with KPHP Lalan-Mendis, the characteristics of PS sites are peatland areas (2). PS Lubuk Bintialo with an area of 513 Ha with the Community Forest approach (HKm) in collaboration with the KPHP Meranti, the characteristics of the PS sites are Protection Forest Areas and (3). Karang Makmur PS with an area of 9,500 Ha with a forestry partnership approach in collaboration with KPHP Lalan-Mendis, the characteristics of PS sites are wetlands.

The stages of PS development accompanied by the KELOLA Sendang consisted of location/site identification, strengthening community institutions, proposing PS management legal access, increasing community management capacity, networking access with various stakeholders at different levels, and upscaling assisted PS. These stages are carried out with a variety of strategic approaches.

Development of Technical Guidelines for the Social Forestry Model document will contain various stages and strategic approaches that have been carried out by KELOLA Sendang together with community groups and KPH.
