Vacancy Announcement "Deputy Program Manager for Marine Science"

The Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS’s) Indonesia Program aims to conserve marine resources vital to the protection and sustainability of a wide range of human activities and livelihoods. Consequently, conservation efforts cannot be separated from the management of fisheries or interaction with coastal communities. WCS employs a rigorous science-based approach to build capacity, strengthen management, support policy and regulation development, and inspire community stewardship for the protection and sustainable use of critical marine ecosystems, fisheries and threatened species. To achieve these goals, WCS employs a science to management approach to assisting the Indonesian government to establish and manage marine protected areas (MPAs), manage small-scale fisheries, and conserve sharks and rays in Aceh, North Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, and North Maluku plus several other sites.

WCS Indonesia’s approach is defined by the five core WCS Global components of Protect, Discover, Inspire and Leverage, and Build. This structure was developed as part of WCS 2020 to reflect the importance of combining our scientific research with broader public awareness and direct engagement with decision makers. Success will depend on our ability to leverage the interplay between these themes to create larger policy and protection impacts.

The WCS Indonesia Marine program focuses on the establishment and effective management of MPAs and development of sustainable fisheries, as interlinked strategies to secure and manage Indonesia’s coastal marine resources. WCS is committed to assisting the Government of Indonesia to meet its national and international commitments to MPA establishment and management – including the commitment to achieve 31 million hectares of MPAs by 2030. MPAs benefit both biodiversity and fisheries management by protecting habitats and protecting breeding populations of important marine organisms.

The basis of all of our work is scientific data. Our teams of marine biologists, fisheries scientists, and socioeconomic specialists inform project design with baseline surveys. Regular monitoring of resources informs all subsequent decision making.

The role will oversee WCS Indonesia’s fisheries and marine science initiatives to ensure that our conservation programs are informed by sound data and grounded in the latest scientific principles and engage with international initiatives on fisheries and marine sciences, including socio-economics studies. The WCS Indonesia Marine Program has a firm foundation in coral reef ecological monitoring, and as the program has grown this work has expanded to socio-economic monitoring and fisheries science. The marine program now employs a wide range of scientific techniques ranging from underwater marine surveys, advanced statistics and modeling for fisheries, DNA analysis, spatial analysis, social science and more. The Marine Science Deputy Program Manager will support these efforts directly or indirectly in close coordination with the entire marine team and other science-related units in WCS Indonesia and WCS global.
