Title                  : Consultant for Translation

Duty Station     : Jakarta, Indonesia

Project              : Strategic Partnership – Green and Inclusive Energy

Report to          : GIE Regional Advocacy Officer

Duration            : August to October 2020

1.     Background

Hivos Southeast Asia is an International non-governmental organization guided by humanist values. It aims at structural poverty alleviation with a strong focus on civil society building and sustainable economic development. Hivos Southeast Asia provides financial support for local NGOs, is active in networking, lobbying and exchanging knowledge and expertise. Hivos opts for 100 percent renewable energy, worldwide. Hivos believes energy is a vital driving force for development. Access to energy can alleviate poverty, improve living conditions and propel economic development. However, continuing along the fossil fuel route to harmful climate change will have disastrous effects, especially for developing countries. Hivos would much rather stimulate sustainable development fueled by clean energy.

Strategic Partnership Green and Inclusive Energy is a programme that is initiated by Hivos, supported by the Netherlands’ Government, to enable more civil society organizations to do lobby and advocacy in the area of Green and Inclusive Energy. The programme was started since 2016, where in Indonesia, it involves three national CSOs as the core team of the programme, and designed to outreach non-energy CSOs, media, and wider public, including the Government on Green and Inclusive Energy. The three national organizations are Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), Koalisi Perempuan Indonesia, and Yayasan Lembaga Konsumen Indonesia (YLKI) which have different target groups and beneficiaries in different areas, mainly in Central Java and Jakarta.

Considering the project ends this year, Hivos Southeast Asia plans to enhance our existing written communications products under SP-GIE. The project has a number of published impact stories, human-interest stories, discussion reportage, articles and studies. It covers green and inclusive energy topics from the village, provincial, regional to the global levels. The pieces also contain information on the works that Strategic Partnership has developed in Indonesia.

Though the project will end, we expect that this information will continue to be disseminated more inclusively and extensively. At present, we have stories and studies both in English and Bahasa that need to be translated. By translating more written publication from English to Bahasa, and vice versa, we will reach broader audience. The translation results will be published on two platforms: SP-GIE microsite (www.energiterbarukan.org) and Hivos website (www.sea.hivos.org). Particularly on the microsite, its main language is Bahasa and is currently use as a pool of information and has been known among our renewable energy networks: partners, journalist forum and coalition. We believe that more content translation will be effective to raise more public’s awareness Indonesia. It will support more people to understand and apply their understanding on renewable energy into practice, making green and inclusive energy to be reality in Indonesia.

To do so, we are seeking a consultant to translate our stories and studies under Strategic Partnership Green and Inclusive program both from English to Bahasa, and vice versa.
