Most current direction is social forestry will be managed directly by community through hutan desa or village forest.

In the Forestry’s RPMJ 2015-2019 it was targeted a total area of 12,700.000 ha forest will be managed under social forestry regime, unfortunately up to dates, only small proportion has been achieved. Of the social forestry national target, about 47,105 ha forest has been set for West Papua Province. Over the years, few permits have been granted for hutan desa in West Papua, namely in Kaimana and Sorong Selatan District. However, due to technical and social constraints there no field activities, which in turn, these permits have rebuked.
