Senior Conservation Program Director


The Senior Conservation Program Director provides strategic and programmatic leadership for a program.  S/he is responsible for senior-level program management and ensuring that program strategies, initiatives and outcomes advance Conservation International’s (CI’s) human development and conservation priorities.  Duties are complex and include leading the design, implementation and integration of program strategies throughout the program and across CI. The Senior Conservation Program Director provides broad programmatic, project, monitoring and technical oversight and continuously engages key internal and external partners critical to program success.  S/he ensures compliance with CI policies, program and funding agreements and local requirements.

The Senior Conservation Program Director plays a leading role in managing project proposals, advancing funding relationships with key partners and securing program funding.  S/he continuously represents CI and leverages alliances to engage and influence key external stakeholders including government and NGO officials, donors, and other parties that are critical to program success.  The Senior Conservation Program Director collaborates with staff throughout CI to ensure the program forms an integral part of achieving organization-wide goals.  S/he identifies capacity gaps and provides high-level oversight in implementing strategies that build capacity and drive program objectives forward. The Senior Conservation Program Director directly manages staff, interdisciplinary teams, and/or outside partners. S/he works with a high degree of independence.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

·       Develop program strategies, objectives, work plans and metrics.

§  Exhibit independent logical judgment in the development of plans and ideas and to discuss those in a productive manner with Senior Management Team.

§  Develop sub-national conservation programs based on and the corridor of the CI Southern Cross that include Natural Climate Solutions programs, sustainable landscapes and seascapes (may include marine and terrestrial protected areas), species, biodiversity, and ecosystem conservation, and sustainable livelihood programs.

§  Align or integrate CI programs with the sub-national government development programs by taking into account local aspiration, desires, targets, and objectives.

§  Participate in the national conservation programs planning by collaborating with the other Senior Management Team.

·       Provide strategic oversight and team leadership to effectively implement program activities and ensure high-impact outputs.  Lead and inspire program and technical staff.

·       Lead program alignment and integration with division and CI-wide conservation priorities.  Engage CI leadership and other senior staff.

·       Monitor, measure, interpret, and share results on a regular basis.  Distribute financial and progress reports.  Modify strategies and work plans and strategies as needed.

§  Ensure field program implementations are consistent with the plans by conducting regular monitoring and surveillance.

§  Communicate CI’s programs to local stakeholders, particularly local governments, and seek for their supports in effective program implementation.

§  Work with the Operation Director to ensure adequate supply of tools and equipment as well as efficient operational process in field program execution.

§  Work with the Human Resource Director to provide adequate staffs for program implementation.

§  Evaluate program implementation as a feedback for program planning and improvement.

§  Provide regular reports to the governments, CI-APFD, and as required.

·       Directly oversee and ensure program compliance with CI policies, funding agreements and local requirements.

·       Champion knowledge sharing and cross collaboration to build capacity and address capacity gaps.  Position CI as a recognized and sought after subject-matter expert. 

·       Advance and influence stakeholder understanding and support through proactive communication efforts including fact sheets, statistics, and other high-level communication materials.

·       Hold conferences and learning events to share CI’s expertise, best practices and amplify success with key audiences.

·       Continuously cultivate and engage stakeholders including donors, government and NGOs, technical colleagues and other partners critical to program success. 

·       Continuously represent the organization externally.  Serve as a trusted and visible point of contact for CI. 

·       Ensure program financial sustainability by securing program funding. Regularly partner with CI Indonesia, Regional and Global staff on funding proposals and regional/global fundraising efforts.

 

PEOPLE AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

·       Directly supervise program and project staff, including overseeing the work of external partners.

§  Provide day-to-day strategic and technical directions and advices to the regional directors and managers.

§  Oversee and supervise regional directors (and conservation staffs) to develop and walk on the periodic (annual) workplan.

§  Formulate and organize internal and/or external training and enhancement programs to improve staff capacity.

·       Manage the program’s budget and finances. 

·       Manage public or private funds; ensure compliance with donor requirements and CI policies.

QUALIFICATIONS

·       Graduate level studies and 12 years or more related experience.  Advanced degree strongly preferred.

·       Senior-level program or project management experience, preferably in the global conservation, NGO, advocacy or related for-profit arena. 

·       Experience in designing, managing conservation projects and teams. Experience in REDD+ or in sustainable landscapes or seascapes management is preferred.

·       Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects or initiatives involving multiple internal and external stakeholders.

·       Superb technical and analytical skills. 

·       Excellent organization and time management skills.

·       3 – 5 years experience supervising others including multi-disciplinary teams. 

·       Proven leadership skills and success in effectively inspiring and engaging diverse works groups in a multicultural environment.

·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

·       A record of success partnering with, and influencing, key stakeholders and successfully raising funds. Preferred understanding and/or experience in blended financing mechanism.

·       Proven ability to multitask and meet priorities.   Adept at working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities with limited supervision. 

·       Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and internet applications

·       Fluency in English required.

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

·       Master degree (or Ph.D degree) in environmental science, natural resources management, marine and fisheries, development economy, forestry management or other relevant programs

·       Strong understanding of NGO working style and philosophy

·       Familiarity with corporate communications tools and mastering cutting-edge computer programs

·       Strong knowledge/understanding of sub-national government system.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

·       Local and/or international travel of 30% or more, often in difficult travel conditions.

·       Ability to work in remote locations or under difficult working conditions.
