Key Purpose of the Job

The UKCCU/NICFI through KELOLA Sendang Project works with the Government of South Sumatra, national and district level governments, communities and the private sector to facilitate and support the government, private sector and local communities, to establish and pilot the sustainable landscape management partnership approach in the Sembilang-Dangku landscape of South Sumatra. The proposed impact of this project is to achieve “Inclusive economic growth and community prosperity, biodiversity conservation, forest protection and restoration, and the ending of deforestation, peatland drainage and wildfires that reduces land-based Greenhouse Gas emissions”.

In support of South Sumatra's green growth vision, the South Sumatra provincial government has developed a Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (BSAP) for South Sumatra Province 2017-2021, in which one action plan for biodiversity conservation is through identification and inventory of species and their distribution. Research and publications on biodiversity in South Sumatra are still very limited in certain regions, so a list of species and their distribution is needed to provide an overview of the biodiversity in the South Sumatra region and subsequent management planning.

One form of support for the KELOLA Sendang project in conservation of biodiversity is through inventory and identification of biodiversity and its distribution, specifically in the Sembilang-Dangku landscape. In 2017, the KELOLA Sendang project initiated an inventory of animals, especially large mammals, through occupancy survey and camera trap installation in the Dangku landscape. In the end of 2018, the installation of camera traps to inventory large mammals in the Sembilang landscape has also begun to be implemented. In addition to inventorying large mammals, KELOLA Sendang project also aims to support the study of inventory of other flora and fauna, especially endemic species and priority species contained in South Sumatra BSAP as well as species that can be used as indicators of environmental quality/change (e.g. fish, butterflies, dragonflies, and other small organisms), along with their distribution in the Sembilang-Dangku landscape. All biodiversity data collected during the project will be integrated into one biodiversity information portal system that will be developed.
