GIZ Indonesia for the Business Hub Indonesia - Sustainable Rattan Project: Technical Advisor (Field Staff), duty based in West Sumatera

 The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations. Its corporate objective is to improve people’s living conditions on a sustainable basis. GIZ has been working in Indonesia since 1975 on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

 

Business Hub Indonesia is a project management unit within GIZ Indonesia focusing on private sector cooperation in development initiatives. Current and upcoming projects under the Business Hub work directly and in cooperation with several private companies.

 

A develoPPP.de project managed under the Business Hub, Sustainable Rattan with Vivere and Out for Space (OfS) GmbH, aims to promote sustainability of the rattan supply chain for innovative rattan products of selected farmers in Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan and Java. In order to achieve this, the project will mainly work on five intervention areas or work packages (WP), namely:

 

WP1 Sustainable resource management: a management plan for sustainable harvesting of rattan in the natural forests will be developed for the pilot areas.

 

WP2 Traceability system and benefit scheme: capacity of existing or newly set-up farmer organizations will be strengthened to develop tools and test procedures needed for establishing a monitoring system for the flow of raw materials from the point of harvesting to the processing area.

 

WP3 Quality management system: improvement plan for an advanced control system will developed and implemented to guarantee high quality material output.

 

WP4 Use of lesser-known rattan species: assessment of alternative rattan species will be carried out in order to mitigate the risks of overexploiting well-known rattan species.

 

WP5 Capacity building and knowledge sharing: capacity building programs will comprise training of farmer groups and production staff of the furniture sector, workshop with designers and craftsmen and relevant knowledge sharing fora.

 

GIZ is seeking one qualified Indonesian candidate for the following position:

 

Technical Advisor (Field Staff)

 

A.  Responsibilities, but is not limited to:

·    Provide support to field activities/technical assistance in West Sumatera (Padang, Solok, Sijunjung) according to the GIZ standards and in close partnership with the rattan farmers/harvesters/villagers/social forestry Institution/farmer institution/village institution.

·    Provide support to the project in achieving the project goals and implementing field activities agreed with the partners

·    To carry out field activities in a timely high-quality manner·

·    Provide support to Project Coordinators in ensuring the contribution of the GIZ in the Sustainable Rattan Management by providing professional advice to rattan farmers and partners and maintaining its communication

 

In close coordination with the GIZ Project Coordinator placed at the Business Hub Jakarta Office, the field staff performs the following tasks

 

B.  Tasks

1.   Technical Services

·    Carry out field activities at village level in accordance to approved work plan and budget.

·    Support the GIZ Project Coordinator to conduct and monitor pilot project in the field location.

·      Give trainings on rattan cultivation, nursery management, intensive silviculture technique, organisational development and rattan harvesting to Rattan Farmers

·      Give trainings to Rattan Craftsmen on Environmental-friendly Rattan Processing and product development

·    Facilitate in establishing or strengthening community/village institution/social forestry institution.

·    Conduct case studies/action research, as required and document the process and key findings

 

2.   Coordination, Communication and Networking

· Coordinate with district line agencies such as DLHK, Bappeda, Disperindag and other key stakeholders such as FMU/KPH, LPHD/LPHN, Koperasi, Bumdes in planning and implementing field level activities in a coordinated way to ensure adequate programme synergies and to leverage resources.

· Participate in relevant events such as meetings and workshops organized by other stakeholders at the district level and cross learning both within and outside the project

·       in close coordination with the GIZ Project Coordinator and with private partners, executing the technical implementation of project activities

·       Provide project reporting documents, including but not limited to: semi-annual and annual reports to project partners as well as data and materials for the progress reports

·       Provide project monitoring tasks, which include but not limited to: activity monitoring, result-based monitoring and GIZ results data

 

3.   Other duties/additional tasks

·       performs other duties and tasks at the request of Business Hub management

 

C.    Required qualifications, competencies and experience

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant study to achieve the project objectives (e.g.: forestry, environmental science, economy, natural resources and conservation, agroforestry, furniture industry, product design, interior design, or other relevant field).

 

Professional experience

  • At least 5 years of experiences especially in the Rattan or non-timber forest product and community development
  • Willing to work mostly in the field and remote areas.
  • understanding on forestry cultivation/ intensive silviculture, especially Rattan
  • experiences in the rural community development and non-timber value chain approach
  • experience in establishing networks and partnerships with different type of stakeholders including farmers and farmers group

 

Other knowledge, additional competences

  • Self-motivated with time and stress management skills and ability to work independently
  • Ability to take responsibility, meet deadlines and make progress with minimum supervision
  • Willing to travel extensively to the project implemented sites to conduct trainings, monitoring and evaluation, and other field research and able to adjust and work in tough field situations.
  • Capacity and willingness to learn new skills, research methods, and work routines under the mentorship of Advisor Central Kalimantan
  • Willingness to travel and perform duties services in other locations of the project (Aceh, Central Kalimantan, etc.)
  • Good oral and written communications in English and Indonesia.
