Project Overview and Role:

About PERINTIS – PERINTIS is a project implemented under the DFAT-funded Indonesia Australia Partnership for Infrastructure (KIAT).

The purpose of PERINTIS is to support Palembang’s sanitation program through a social marketing campaign and training. The focus is on helping community members make informed decisions about sanitation and assisting local government and contractors to deliver effective sanitation services.

Based in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia, the Safeguards Specialist will be responsible for supporting the PERINTIS GEDSI and Safeguards Coordinator and the Leadership Team to implement the Safeguards Action Plan, provide different types of training to the team, and create safeguarding plans for community outreach activities, especially when children may be present. This position reports to the Deputy Team Leader and the Program Manager. The candidate may work remotely with trips to Palembang, or be based in Palembang, South Sumatra. 

Duties:

  • Provide leadership and support to GEDSI Coordinator in developing and implementing PERINTIS Safeguards Action Plan and building capacity where possible.
  • Provide leadership and support to the TL/DTL and PERINTIS team members in developing and integrating Safeguards issues into the PERINTIS program.
  • Work with the GEDSI and Marketing and Communications teams to support the development of advocacy materials for community members and local partners around child rights and child protection. 
  • Implement context-specific child protection training for all PERINTIS staff and downstream partners as required.
  • Implement context-specific disability training for all PERINTIS staff and downstream partners as required.
  • Work to develop and implement a child protection/child safe plan for all PERINTIS socialisation activities with the community and/or in schools.
  • Support the PERINTIS team in explaining and promoting Safeguarding and GEDSI issues to LG Dinas, private sector organisations.
  • Work with local NGOs and CSOs to ensure all PERINTIS activities are aligned to safeguarding international best practice.
  • Support the Socialisation team in-person at events in the community where children are likely to be present to ensure the safety and protection of children.
  • Ensure all deliverables associated with the program are met on time and are of a high quality.
  • Work collaboratively with the PERINTIS TL/DTL to provide information to KIAT Management in Jakarta including the KIAT Safeguards Specialist on Safeguarding issues when required.
  • Work closely with the Workplace Health and Safety specialist to ensure that children practice safe behaviours around machinery and work sites, and they are aware of the dangers as well as the alert/alarm procedures if an accident occurs.

Skills and Experience:

Qualifications:

  • A first degree or higher in relevant fields of either government, development studies, gender and development, political science, sociology, law, or other.
  • A postgraduate degree is considered an asset. 

Experience:

·      Minimum of 5 years’ experience working on Safeguarding issues, with specialised knowledge of child protection, and disability issues.

·      Demonstrated experience in working with a wide range of groups including government departments, CSO/CBOs, private sector, and education and training institutions.

·      Demonstrated experience working with various donors such as DFAT on implementing and establishing safeguarding mechanisms.

·      Demonstrated experience in engaging with vulnerable communities impacted by development programs of industry and government.

Desirable:

  • Bahasa Indonesia language skills; native, fluent, or intermediate.
